Course Location and Travel Information

The first portion of training (UT II) is presented in an eLearning (self-paced) format for learners to complete prior to meeting in person on 24-28 February 2025 in Houston.  Access to the eLearning will open on 3 February 2025. It is imperative that learners schedule appropriate time to complete the eLearning (approximately 15 hours for UT II) prior to the in-person training session. If the eLearning is not completed prior to the in-person session, learners may not understand key concepts presented during the in-person sessions. Learners will also complete a separate introductory drone eLearning prior to meeting in person. This course takes approximately one hour and must be completed before completing the in-person drone training at MFE Inspection Solutions on 27-28 February 2025.

The second portion of training (UT II) is presented as an in-person, hands-on session occurring 24-26 February 2025 at ASNT Houston (912 Gemini St, Houston, TX) daily from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. CT (America/Chicago). ASNT has a corporate rate with Homewood Suites by Hilton Houston Clear Lake NASA near ASNT Houston, which offers complimentary Wi-Fi and breakfast at discounted rates. Visit the hotel site directly to book your stay.

The third portion of training (Elios drone training) is presented as an in-person, hands-on session occurring 27-28 February 2025 at MFE Inspection Solutions (6025 Fairmont Pkwy, Pasadena, TX) daily from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. CT (America/Chicago). MFE is located approximately 15 minutes from ASNT Houston. This course does have an introductory eLearning course related to the Elios drone that will need to be completed PRIOR to the start of the in-person, hands-on training. Please allow approximately 1-1.5 hours for the eLearning completion.

*It is recommended that registered attendees do not book air travel until 14 days prior to the start of the class to ensure the class is being held.

Course Descriptions

Get ready to take your career to the next level! This course combines two offerings (UT II offered by ASNT and Elios AIIM drone training offered by MFE Inspection Solutions) to give you the theory, methodology, and hands-on application necessary for UT II technicians under SNT-TC-1A, along with learning how to use new and advanced drone technology to complete ultrasonic inspection in confined spaces.

UT II (40 Hours): ASNT

This comprehensive, 40-hour ultrasonic testing course is designed for professionals aiming to achieve Level II qualifications, offering a combination of eLearning instruction and hands-on lab experience. Participants will delve into fundamental principles such as equipment calibration, defect detection, characterization, and data interpretation, with a strong focus on both theoretical and practical aspects of ultrasonic testing.

Through various hands-on exercises, attendees will enhance their technical skills and confidence in using ultrasonic testing equipment. By the conclusion of the program, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and practical experience to advance their careers in nondestructive testing.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles and applications of ultrasonic testing
  • Describe the qualifications and certifications applicable to Level I, II, and III personnel
  • Define and differentiate between the various modes of sound waves, such as shear, Rayleigh, longitudinal, and lamb waves
  • Describe the concepts of acoustical impedance, impedance ratio, refraction, mode conversion, Snell’s law, and critical angles within ultrasonic testing scenarios
  • Recognize common ultrasonic testing equipment along with functionality of the test equipment
  • Conduct instrument calibration, standardizing, and pretest equipment condition checks
  • Explain the role and types of transducers in ultrasonic testing, along with transducer elements, frequency, selection, near/far field zones, beam spread, resolution, couplant usage, and the effect of frequency and diameter
  • Describe the most used ultrasonic testing methods and the sub-techniques within them
  • Interpret ultrasonic signals to determine the presence of defects such as cracks, voids, and inclusions
  • Evaluate the quality of base materials such as ingots, castings, and composites, and assess their compliance with quality standards
  • Review the differences between written instructions and procedures and how to apply them practically on the job

This course (UT II 40 Hours) meets the recommendations for training as described in SNT-TC-1A.
