Magnetic particle testing is a widely used NDT method, very useful for testing materials such as steel and welded joints. It is common for inspectors to be tasked with examining conditions such as coatings, roughness, and other types of corrosion protection such as galvanized steel. To ensure a quality examination, inspectors must know about which type of coating they are inspecting, in order to know if this kind of testing can be done successfully. This presentation will provide an overview of the factors that MT inspectors need to keep in mind when taking on this kind of project. It will describe some recommended points to keep in mind during the procedure development for an MT inspection over coated surfaces.

By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Explain in a clear and objective way the most important points during an MT inspection over surfaces with applied coatings.
  • Identify the concept of magnetism and recall how MT works as a basis for understanding the test procedure.
  • Categorize and subdivide several kinds of coatings depending on the type of environment and component.
  • Recognize the types of curing processes for coatings and how these processes could affect magnetic particle testing.
