Introduction to Time of Flight Diffraction

Training Icon eLearning

This 15-hour introductory course helps learners who are new to Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) learn its core concepts at their own pace. It covers equipment, diffraction theory, setup, scanning, data processing, and analysis, so learners come away understanding how TOFD inspections work.

Course Overview

This 15-hour course introduces Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) through a structured series of video lessons, followed by a self-evaluation to check understanding. Learners begin with an overview of TOFD inspection and its equipment, including instruments, probes, wedges, and accessories. Theory lessons explain diffraction, signals, the pitch-catch setup, and beam behavior, along with the method’s limitations. Next, the course covers how data is displayed and how to use cursors and scans. Learners then study setup and procedure variables, followed by inspection steps such as locating the beam index point, setting velocity, and scanning. The course finishes with data processing (wedge delay, straightening, and lateral wave removal) and data analysis, including ISO 15626. The 20-question self-evaluation test links each question to an explanatory video, so learners can review any topic they missed.

ASNT partners with PhaseX to deliver this course. Enrollment is completed through ASNT’s learning management system, while coursework takes place on PhaseX’s learning platform.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Have Covered:

  • How diffraction produces TOFD signals and how a pitch-catch probe setup detects them
  • TOFD equipment, including instruments, probes, and wedges, and the role of each
  • TOFD beam behavior and the method’s main limitations
  • TOFD data displays and inspection steps, including setup, locating the beam index point, setting velocity, and scanning
  • Data processing techniques (wedge delay, straightening, and lateral wave removal) and how indications are evaluated under ISO 15626
