Course Overview

This 15-hour course introduces Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) through a structured series of video lessons, followed by a self-evaluation to check understanding. Learners start with how PAUT fits among other NDT methods and how phasing, steering, and focusing work. They then move on to the equipment: instruments, probes, wedges, and scanners. Lessons cover scans, views, cursors, and gates, then setup and procedure variables, then calibration of velocity, wedge delay, TCG, and encoders. The course walks through the inspection itself, from probe positioning and scanning to data recording, and closes with data analysis and the defects learners can expect to find. The 20-question self-evaluation test links each question to an explanatory video, so learners can review any topic they missed.

ASNT partners with PhaseX to deliver this course. Enrollment is completed through ASNT’s learning management system, while coursework takes place on PhaseX’s learning platform.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Have Covered:

  • How phasing, beam steering, and focusing form and control a phased array beam
  • The main components of a PAUT system (instruments, probes, wedges, and scanners) and the role of each
  • Common PAUT scans and views, and how cursors and gates are used to evaluate data
  • Setting up and calibrating a PAUT inspection, including velocity, wedge delay, TCG, and encoder calibration
  • Probe positioning, scanning, data recording, and the defects commonly found during data analysis
