Course Overview
The rapid evolution of digital technologies is transforming the way nondestructive evaluation (NDE) data is acquired, managed, interpreted, and communicated. This short course introduces the foundational concepts of NDE 4.0 and explores how emerging digital workflows can be applied to portable inspection environments across industries such as energy, petrochemical, infrastructure, aerospace, and manufacturing. Participants will examine how advances in sensing, computing, connectivity, and data management are enabling the creation of digital representations of inspected assets, often referred to as digital twins, that provide a richer and more persistent record of inspection activities than traditional reporting methods. The course will establish the key principles behind digital transformation in NDE, including data traceability, spatial awareness, interoperability, cloud-enabled collaboration, and lifecycle asset intelligence.
A central focus of the course is the integration of three-dimensional spatial information into portable inspection workflows. Participants will review current technologies for surface digitization and 3D position tracking, including optical scanning, structured light systems, photogrammetry, LiDAR, and other emerging approaches suitable for field deployment. The advantages and limitations of absolute 3D position encoding will be compared with traditional relative 2D encoding methods commonly used in portable ultrasonic and electromagnetic inspections. Through practical examples, attendees will learn how accurate spatial registration enables inspection results to be mapped directly onto digital asset models, improving repeatability, inspection coverage analysis, and long-term condition monitoring.
The course will also explore advanced data fusion techniques that combine information from multiple NDE modalities, including conventional ultrasonic testing (UT), phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), eddy current testing (ECT), eddy current array (ECA), visual inspection data, and high-resolution surface topography measurements. Participants will examine methods for correlating and visualizing heterogeneous datasets within a common spatial framework, creating more comprehensive representations of asset condition than any individual technique can provide. Finally, the course will discuss emerging approaches to automated feature extraction, data analytics, and cloud-based reporting platforms that support improved decision-making and collaboration among inspectors, engineers, integrity managers, and asset owners. By connecting modern inspection technologies with broader digital engineering initiatives, this course provides attendees with a practical understanding of how portable NDE systems are evolving to support the next generation of asset integrity programs.
Upon Completion, Learners Will Be Able To:
- Understand the fundamental concepts and principles of NDE 4.0 and their application to portable nondestructive inspection workflows.
- Compare 3D spatial encoding technologies (optical scanning, structured light, photogrammetry, LiDAR) against traditional 2D relative encoding methods used in portable ultrasonic and electromagnetic inspections.
- Evaluate how accurate spatial registration improves inspection repeatability, coverage analysis, and long-term condition monitoring.
- Understand methods for fusing multi-modal NDE data (UT, PAUT, ECT/ECA, visual, surface topography) within a common spatial framework to support integrity decision-making.
