Course Overview
This course offers a thorough introduction to manual ultrasonic testing, guiding students through the essential principles of sound and ultrasound, the dB system, and instrument, probe, and wedge fundamentals. It covers 0-degree techniques such as thickness measurement, lamination checks, and corrosion mapping, as well as angled-beam techniques for weld inspection, including Snell's law, beam index point calibration, and skip-distance calculations. Interactive exercises and section tests reinforce learning throughout, with a final review section and comprehensive final test to confirm readiness for certification.
ASNT partners with PhaseX to deliver this course. Enrollment is completed through ASNT’s learning management system, while coursework takes place on PhaseX’s learning platform.
Upon Completion, Learners Will Have Covered:
- Fundamental principles of sound, ultrasound, wave propagation, and the dB system
- Instrument, probe, and wedge selection, setup, and calibration procedures
- 0-degree scanning techniques, including thickness measurement, lamination detection, and corrosion mapping
- 0-degree calibration methods: velocity, wedge delay, DAC, and TCG
- Angled-beam inspection of common weld types (SMAW, SAW, GTAW, GMAW)
- Angled-beam theory, including Snell's law, critical angles, and refracted wave behavior
- Angled-beam calibration: beam index point, refracted angle, sensitivity, velocity, wedge delay, DAC, and TCG
- Flaw sizing and location techniques: -6 dB drop, depth, length, width, skip distance, and V-path calculations
- Interactive exercises covering laminations, corrosion, and angled-beam scanning
- Preparation materials aligned with certification exam requirements

Note: Completion of this eLearning course provides 40 hours of training toward the recommended training requirements outlined in SNT-TC-1A and is consistent with the training guidelines of NAS-410, CP-189, and EN 9712 as applicable.This training is one component of the overall qualification process and must be supplemented by required reading assignments and employer-sponsored hands-on practical training. Additional site- and application-specific training may be required in accordance with employer procedures and applicable standards.

Completion of this course alone does not satisfy certification requirements. Final qualification and certification are the responsibility of the employer.
*A passing score of 70% on the final exam is required to complete the course and receive a certificate of completion. Learners will receive three attempts to pass the exam. If the learner is unable to pass the final exam within the three attempts, the course will need to be repurchased.
