Course Overview

ASNT Executive Director Neal Couture has encouraged members to commit to the highest of ethical standards and performance in NDT, emphasizing, "The public's trust in NDT depends on it." In addition to holding yourself accountable, such a commitment entails anticipating how you might respond to an unethical request from a leader, whether that is your manager, your Responsible Level III, a client, or someone else you accept influence from. Grounded in empirical analysis of NDT engineers and their experiences of ethical dilemmas, Dr. Kyle Payne will summarize key findings from his research on ethical followership, detailing how NDT professionals respond when facing an unethical request from a leader. He will ask participants to reflect on the tools that have helped them resist unethical requests in the past and those that can empower them to foster ethical behavior in the future.

Upon Completion, Learners Will Be Able To:

  • To define ethical followership.
  • To recognize how ethical followers identify and make sense of ethical dilemmas.
  • To identify examples of how ethical followers resist an unethical request from a leader.
  • To select ethical follower behaviors that are likely to influence leaders and stakeholders in your work environment.
