The Level III population of inspectors is graying and looking forward to retirement. There is a current shortage of qualified Level IIIs in all NDT methods. With more Level IIIs approaching retirement, that shortage will be exacerbated. This presentation will suggest how current MT and PT Level IIIs can mentor the next generation of inspectors to take their positions within the industry. The paper will highlight several aspects of the approaching crisis and suggest practical approaches to mentoring the next generation of Level IIIs.

George Hopman just resigned as the ASTM E07.03 Liquid Penetrant/Magnetic Particle Chairman after twelve years of service. He holds current ASNT Level III certifications in MT, PT, ET, RT, UT, VT and MFL. He has worked for three industrial NDT labs as well as Boeing and Honeywell as a Level 3 in five disciplines. He has presented at approximately 17 ASNT Conferences. He has authored two articles for Materials Evaluation and five for Quality Magazine. He belongs to the 2011 class of ASNT Fellows and received the ASNT Mentoring award in 2014. He considers himself an eternal student and enjoys sharing what he has learned from those who have preceded him.
